Deze sluis uit 1815 is een Rijksmonument en een van de zeldzaamste sluizen in Nederland.<\/p>\n<p>Woudrichem, in de volksmond ook wel &#8216;Woerkum&#8217; genoemd, ligt in Noord-Brabant, op het punt waar de Afgedamde Maas uitkomt op de Merwede. Aan de overkant ligt Slot Loevestein in Gelderland. Samen met Gorkum in Zuid-Holland en Fort Vuren vormt Woudrichem de zuidelijke vestingdriehoek van de Hollandse Waterlinies.<\/p>\n<p>Weet je wat inundatie betekent? Dat is het bewust onder water zetten van het land. Dat was het slimme verdedigingssysteem van de Hollandse Waterlinies. Bij gevaar werd het land blank gezet. Te diep voor mensen en paarden, maar te ondiep voor boten. Via sluizen werd het rivierwater het Land van Altena ingeleid.<\/p>\n<p>De waaiersluis speelde daarin een sleutelrol. Een waaiersluis is een bijzonder type sluis: hij kan worden geopend en gesloten, ook als het water buiten hoger staat dan het water van binnen. Dat was nodig omdat de rivier hier eb en vloed kent. Van dit type sluizen zijn er nog maar een paar in heel Nederland.<\/p>\n<p>Het militaire sluizencomplex hier is grotendeels intact gebleven. De stuwsluis en de zeldzame waaiersluis uit 1815 zijn weliswaar permanent gesloten, maar de situatie van vroeger is hier nog goed te herkennen.<\/p>\n<p>Vesting Woudrichem deed vanaf 1672 mee als onderdeel van de Oude Hollandse Waterlinie. In 1815 werd ze ook onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.
