Dit lage, natte gebied in de uiterwaarden van de Waal en de Afgedamde Maas draagt zijn naam al eeuwen. In de middeleeuwen hadden monniken hier land in gebruik. De Heer van Altena gaf hen toestemming het gebied te bewerken.<\/p>\n<p>Slot Loevestein, goed zichtbaar aan de overkant, ligt precies op de grens van Gelderland, Noord-Brabant en Zuid-Holland. De dijk waarop je nu loopt ligt in Noord-Brabant. Het slot zelf ligt in Gelderland. Het kasteel werd gebouwd door Dirc Loef van Horne in de 14e eeuw. Hij koos bewust deze plek. Goed te verdedigen en ideaal om tol te heffen van voorbijvarende schepen.<\/p>\n<p>Loevestein speelde een grote rol in de Hollandse Waterlinies. Samen met Woudrichem, Gorinchem en Fort Vuren bewaakte het slot het kwetsbare punt waar Maas en Waal samenkomen. Militaire inundatiesluizen lagen direct ten westen en oosten van het slot. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verloor Loevestein zijn militaire functie. Bij Koninklijk Besluit van 19honderd51 werd het opgeheven als militair steunpunt.<\/p>\n<p>Maar het Munnikenland &#8216;beschermt&#8217; de omgeving nog steeds, nu op een andere manier. Het gebied maakt deel uit van het programma Ruimte voor de Rivier. De dijk werd teruggelegd naar het oosten. De uiterwaarden lopen bij hoog water onder, zodat dorpen en steden droge voeten houden. De rivier krijgt meer ruimte.<\/p>\n<p>Het open linielandschap dat je hier ziet, is het grootste rijksmonument van Nederland en onderdeel van het UNESCO Werelderfgoed Hollandse Waterlinies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n      <section class=\"alignfull section single-map-content-section\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0px;\">\n        <div class=\"text-box\">\n\n\n\n\n\n          <img style=\"width: 80px; height: auto;\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/Schoenen-Linielandschap.svg\">\n          <div>\n            <h3>Route naar punt 3<\/h3>\n            <p class=\"p1\">Wandel verder over de Maasdijk en ga bij knooppunt 2 linksaf de fietsdijk op.
