Het maakt deel uit van het Natura 2000-gebied Loevestein, Pompveld &amp; Kornsche Boezem. Natura 2000 is een Europees netwerk van waardevolle natuurgebieden.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-285\" src=\"https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop8-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop8-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop8-2-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop8-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop8-2-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop8-2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>De dijk waarover je wandelt, dateert uit de vijftiende eeuw. Zie je de diepe plassen? Dat zijn wielen. Een wiel ontstaat door een dijkdoorbraak. Het kolkende water spoelt een diep gat uit in de grond. Na het dichten van de dijk blijven de plassen achter. De wielen bij Brakel zijn littekens van overstromingen uit het verleden. Ze vormen nu pareltjes van natuurschoon. Op enkele plekken heeft Staatsbosbeheer het rietmoeras open gemaakt. Daar profiteert de natuur volop van.<\/p>\n<p>De roerdomp leeft hier. Het is een zeldzame reigersoort die zich verstopt in het riet. Je zult hem, met z&#8217;n karakteristieke geluid, eerder horen dan zien. Ook de karekiet zingt zijn schallend lied vanuit het riet. En er broedt een kolonie purperreigers. Met hun lange nek en rode poten zijn ze niet te missen.
