Slot Loevestein kent een rijke geschiedenis: zo ontsnapte de beroemde jurist Hugo de Groot hier in 1621 uit gevangenschap, verstopt in een boekenkist.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-287\" src=\"https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop12-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop12-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop12-2-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop12-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop12-2-1536x1151.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/qrfgoed.nl\/altena\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/stop12-2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Samen met de vestingsteden Gorinchem, Woudrichem en met Fort Vuren vormde Slot Loevestein de vestingdriehoek: de zuidelijke verdediging van de Hollandse Waterlinies. Twee grote rivieren kwamen hier samen. Dat maakte Slot Loevestein strategisch belangrijk.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Vuren is pas later gebouwd om de verdedigingslinie te versterken. Het fort ligt aan de overkant van de Waal, recht tegenover Slot Loevestein. Samen konden ze kruisvuur leveren op vijandige schepen. Zo werd de doorvaart geblokkeerd. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verloren de Hollandse Waterlinies hun militaire functie. Zo ook Slot Loevestein. In 1951 is het officieel opgeheven als militair steunpunt.<\/p>\n<p>Bij Slot Loevestein eindigt de route. Vanaf dit punt kun je verder wandelen en met het voetveer naar Woudrichem. Wil je de vestingdriehoek verder verkennen? Je kunt de Waal oversteken naar Fort Vuren of naar Gorinchem. De veerpont vertrekt vanaf de steiger tegenover het slot. In het rijksmuseum Slot Loevestein kom je nog veel meer te weten over de rijke geschiedenis van het slot en over zijn rol in de Hollandse Waterlinies. Wil je de vestingdriehoek verder verkennen? Vanaf dit punt kun je doorwandelen naar het voetveer naar Woudrichem (ca. 20 min). Je kunt ook de Waal oversteken naar Fort Vuren of naar Gorinchem.
